Children from the slums play instruments made from trash! Check out the amazing "Landfill Harmonic Orchestra"

July 8, 2015

In the slums of Cateura, Paraguay, most people make a living from items they find in the trash. Cateura is literally built on top of a landfill where many children have grown up playing in the garbage surrounded by drugs and violence. When a passionate music teacher by the name of Favio Chavez ended up with more students than he did instruments, they got creative and ended up using recycle materials found in the trash to create their own instruments. Cellos were created from oil cans and pieces of wood, saxophones created with spoons, buttons, flutes from water pipes and more. They ended up creating one of the most inspirational orchestras I have ever seen, called "Landfill Harmonic" .The teacher says: The world sends us garbage. We send back music". These children were given the opportunity to explore their musical talent and are now making beautiful music.
